About Us

Mission

The Trade Union Society (TUS) is a not for profit organisation that seeks to provide pro bono opportunities for law students with trade unions. Our volunteers are at different levels of their journey in the legal field. This means, all students enrolled on a law program are welcomed.

We provide training and support for our volunteers prior to linking them with our trade union connections. Volunteers are required to attend mandatory developmental training and write a minimum of three articles yearly, to maintain an active membership status in the society.

Vision

The TUS aims to be:

1. Inclusive – We are inclusive to all prospective and current law students.
2. Distinctive – We seek to liaise with trade unions with the objective of supporting their members. The support provided leads to the procurement of legal work experience for the Society’s volunteers on an indiscriminate basis.
3. Socially sustainable – The achievement of social cohesion through the Society’s visibility on social media platforms as a means of nurturing its growth in terms of membership and our network of unions.
4. Impactful – Through the commitment of our volunteers, we aim to improve access to justice for the marginalised members of our trade union networks, while creating a community of future solicitors and barristers who adopts a holistic approach to the maintenance of the rule of law.

History

The Trade Union Society (TUS) was started in August 2021 by Christine Mitchell, Mo Torkian and Jack Fisher; a group of law students who attends the University of Law. The TUS was originally a member of Ulaw’s club and societies, but developed into a not-for-profit in June 2022.

The TUS signed with CAIWU, the Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union as its first affiliate in October 2021, shortly after which our first group of volunteers were trained, received accreditation as trade union representatives and started their journey of supporting the members at CAIWU.

The TUS sighed with BASW in May 2022, expanding its trade union affiliations en route to materialising its vision. To date, the TUS has a large group of volunteers who works probono with CAIWU and BASW. There are no fees for joining the TUS.
